My Response to Raven-Symone “I Will Not Hire Someone With a “Ghetto” Name

If you haven’t been on Twitter and miss the Trending Topic this week then let me inform you. Recently, Ms Raven-Symone, who we all know and love as “Olivia” from the Cosby Show. I personally loved her as Raven Baxter on That’s So Raven on Disney Channel. Well, she made yet again an offensive statement stating

” Can we take back ‘racist’ and say ‘discriminatory’ because I think that’s a better word. I am very discriminatory against those names they were saying in the video.I am not about to hire you if your name is Watermalondrea. It’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna hire you.”

Prior to her comment, The View which is broadcast on ABC network previewed a 20 second clip of the most ghetto names. A recent study published in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behavior, found that many Americans do make racist assumptions based on people’s names. Now my name is Majeidah, which is a uniquely rare name in America and many years I wished my name was much simpler to pronounce. Having people mispronounce and misspell my name is so irritating and frustrating. In school, I would memorize the person in front of me on the name sheet so when a substitute teacher did the roll call I would say “present!” before they even tried to butcher my name. However, having a name that holds such a strong and powerful meaning is a blessing. My name means: The Strength of a Woman in Liberian dialect and God knew exactly what he was doing when he told my mother to name me because it represents everything that I am; A strong woman.

Now, I don’t know if a hiring manager has tossed my resume in the trash because my name is not Brittany, Ashley or Jessica but what I do know is my name has nothing to do with my level of intelligence and work ethic or how passionate I am about the particular position I’m applying for. Raven- Symone says she won’t hire someone with an “Africanize/Ghetto”  name but sits on day time television with a red mo-hawk and shaved sides. I wonder if she would walk in an interview with that hairstyle and I wonder if she would get hired. But I digress, what even defines a ghetto name? All names are made up, some are just more common than others. Just because a name isn’t a typical western name, does not make it ghetto. This is the reason so many little black girls grow up feeling insecure and worthless, changing their beautiful names or shortening their name to fit society standards.

Raven which means a Black Bird (how ironic) does not appear to be a common name. Earlier this year she also made a statement saying she is from every continent in Africa except for one. Yes, you read correctly , she said every continent in Africa. As a proud African let me emphasize that Africa is a beautiful continent with 53 countries. So it is impossible for someone to be from every continent in Africa.

Oh Raven, if only you knew how disappointed we are in you. Does that mean she wouldn’t hire Whoopi Goldberg, or Oprah Winfrey, or Barack Obama, or Condoleezza Rice?

Watermalondrea who is a character played by YouTube sensation Tre Melvin had much to say in response to Raven’s insulting comments.
